There Really Is an Enemy
From Psalm 56
Hope from Today’s Reading:
”On the day I call for help, my enemies will be defeated. I know that God is on my side.” (Psalm 56:9 NCV)
I struggle connecting with a verse like this. My enemies? Who are they? Do I have enemies? I mean, I'm just going through life, doing my work, making breakfast, paying a bill, dressing my daughter. I'm not, like, hiding away in a cave the way David did. I'm not running away from people trying to take my life.
I very easily and very often forget there is an enemy after my soul.
"Control yourselves and be careful! The devil, your enemy, goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat" (1 Peter 5:8 NCV).
I'll be honest. I have a hard time believing this verse. I very much believe in the God I cannot see, but I don't (always) believe in this enemy. I most often live like I'm the only enemy of my soul, and if I can get my desires and needs sorted out, I'll be okay. This is a lie! Someone really is out to get me. Someone really is out to get you. Be aware. Be careful. Be prayerful.
But also, be hopeful. God is on your side.
