Let Your Big Dreams Be Few
From Ecclesiastes 5
Hope from Today’s Reading:
”Let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words.” (Ecclesiastes 5:2-3 ESV)
Translators are all over the place when it comes to this verse. But here’s my takeaway.
It’s coming off the heels of a discussion about not making rash vows—a discussion that basically says, don’t overpromise and underdeliver. When we do that, even the good we do is undercut by the good we said we would do but, ultimately, couldn’t.
I think you should climb high and look out over rooftops to dream big, dream boldly, and dream according to the immeasurable scope of ability your Father brings to the table (see Ephesians 3:20-21). But don’t overdream.
Each one ”comes with much business,” requiring work and extensive planning. Each one eats away at your time, money, energy, and strength—these are not unlimited resources. And though some dreams are well worth the expense, some are not.
So let your big dreams be few.
